Midwest Charity Horse Show announces judges for 2017 and updates about show facilities for Midwest Charity at the Illinois State Fairgrounds

As many know Midwest’s 2017 edition, June 13-17, 2017, will be held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Covered Arena due to the closure of the Coliseum. For purposes of clarification, Midwest Charity’s Board of Directors wanted to provide detail for our trainers and exhibitors about the show arena and additional warm-up rings that have been added. These include the Livestock Center for the ease of our barns stabled at the far end of the horse complex as well as the Food-A-Rama adjacent to the Coliseum and of course Barns 13 and 14.

Covered Arena - Square footage of the Covered Arena is very similar to many venues that Midwest’s trainers and exhibitors are already familiar. Progress is being made on construction to enclose the venue. The Covered Arena measures 225' x 146' (Bleachers on the north side will take up 15', then the fencing will take a few feet as well) for a total of 32,850 Sq. feet empty.  With Bleachers, 210' x 146' = 30,660 Sq. feet.

Below are the dimensions of other popular horse show venues. These dimensions came from each individual show’s prize list.

Rock Creek: 260' x 125' = 32,000 Sq. feet.

Madison Classic: 100' x 220' = 22,000 Sq. feet.

St. Louis National: 120' x 240' = 28,800 Sq. feet.

IL State Fair Coliseum: 241' x 116' = 27,956 Sq. feet.

Warm Up Rings - The new Food-A-Rama: 150’ x 80’ = 12,000 Sq. feet. The street will be blocked to accommodate horse traffic.

Barn 14: 175' x 65' (small practice arena with stabling across from covered arena) = 11,375 Sq. feet.

Barn 13: 150' x 100' = 15,000 Sq. feet.

Exhibitors will enjoy seeing their favorite vendors around the horse complex, featuring food, show supplies, clothing and accessories, fine jewelry and artwork. Vendors who were in the Coliseum will relocate to the front of Barn 14, directly across from the Covered Arena and to other nearby locations within the horse complex. The current list of vendors include: A Little Silver Lining, Loose Ends Jewelry, Show Horse Tack and St. Louis Harness.

Please remember to make your hotel reservations early as there is an FFA convention in town the Monday and Tuesday at the start of the show.

Midwest Charity Horse Show’s 76th annual show includes distinguished panel of judges: Michael Craghead, Fresno, Calif.; Sandra Currier, Bellville, Texas; and Nancy Troutman, Salem, Va. Michael Grimm, Kansas City, Mo. will judge Arabians.

Midwest’s class committee has added three new classes to the Half Arabian division including Half Arabian Country English Pleasure, Open, Amateur and Championship. As always Midwest offers a full complement of classes for the American Saddlebred, Hackney Pony, Morgan, Roadster, Equitation, Arabian and Half Arabian exhibitors.

Midwest Charity Horse Show Association donated $10,000 to the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s Camp COCO from proceeds of its 2016 multi-breed show. Corporate sponsor Steak ‘N Shake and many long-time generous supporters enabled us to continue to donate to the Springfield community, we are grateful for their support. Since its inception, the Midwest Charity Horse Show, an all volunteer, non-subsidized organization, has donated its annual proceeds to a Springfield area charity and has selected Camp COCO as the beneficiary since 1988, creating an endowment fund, with a cumulative donation totaling more than $210,797.

As tradition dictates, the Midwest Charity Horse Show will delight and entertain exhibitors with their legendary nightly parties after the last class in barn 25Q, the famous “Party Barn.”
