Mary Mac Durrett Lancaster, 87

Mary Mac Durrett Lancaster, 87 passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021. She was born on May 8, 1934 to the late John and Pearl Scofield Durrett. As a trainer, Mary had a gift with horses, but she had a passion for working with special needs children as a riding instructor. She is survived by her sons, John Lancaster and Mark Lancaster, both of Frankfort; and her grandchildren, Chase (Justice) Lancaster, Amanda (Jake) Arnold, and Tara Deaton all of Frankfort; as well as her great grandchildren, Logan Arnold and Levi Lancaster, both of Frankfort. Services will be private. Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Road is in charge of arrangements.

Mary was a familiar sight for many years at various horse shows, with her show horses in training. She was always happy and upbeat and a pleasure to visit with. In the last few years, Mary could be seen at various  shows, visiting and enjoying the company of all as well as the show.

Mary started many American Saddlebred riders during her career, some of whom went on to be well-known exhibitors including the daughter, Marla, of former Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins, as well as Amy Dix Rock who later won the World’s Championship on Front Page Lady.

With all that Mac gave to so many during her life, she made sure before she passed that she be remembered not by the amount of flowers she received before her final rest. Please grant the final wishes of this wonderful woman with donations made to the American Saddlebred Pleasure Horse Association. Checks may be made out to: KASPHA, and mailed to Rose Wells, 8717 Vision Place, Louisville, KY 40299. Mac’s legacy will live on with this wonderful association which she supported in so many ways. Again, her celebration of life is Thursday, Sept 30 from 5-8, at Clark Legacy Funeral Home, 3000 Versailles Road, Frankfort, KY 40601. Her family is truly grateful.
