Johnny Lucas

Sad news from North Carolina as renowned horseman and leather craftsman Johnny Lucas passed away Thursday, September 7. Our thoughts are with his wife Sammye, sons Bo and Robbie, as well as grandchildren and extended family.

Lucas left home at the age of 15 and went to California to work for Why Worry Farm. When he eventually returned to the east, he set out on a long and successful career. Lucas eventually worked for the W.L. Simon family and then the York family’s Whisperwind Farm before establishing Johnny Lucas & Sons Stable for himself.

A member of the Tom Moore UPHA Hall of Fame and the Carolina Horsemen’s Hall of Fame, Lucas had been an institution in the Carolinas for decades and was much sought after for advice in many areas of the business. Some of his world’s champion stars included Sultan’s Matchmaker, Dynasty, Talented Asset, Cocomotion, and George Amos.

The family has announced that a Celebration of Life will be held at a time still to be determined.
